Hypnotherapy, exactly what is it?

Many people comment on how ‘normal’ hypnosis feels. Hypnosis is simply a means of harnessing a normal, natural, trance like state. Most people are surprised to learn that we go into trance naturally many times a day. We can be in a form of trance, for example, when we are driving long distance, out for a run or even just daydreaming.

Put simply, hypnosis is merely the natural harnessing of focused thought. It is what we focus on that provides us with an emotional response. Imagine lying on a sunny beach in your favourite holiday destination, and this can make you feel relaxed and happy. Conversely repeated negative thoughts can make you feel unhappy and  lead to all manner of problems.ie. phobias, fears,panic attacks, depression, anxiety and so on. Whilst on the couch during hypnotherapy you will be guided away from negative thinking, and directed towards positive thoughts and ultimately positive outcomes.

When entering hypnosis on the therapists couch, you are in a relaxed, pleasant but concentrated state, where you have a very much heightened awareness. Through neuroscience we now know that during the REM period of sleep the brain is more active and alert.Therefore, when replicating this ‘dream like’ state on the therapists couch, the subconscious mind is more susceptible to positive suggestion and therapeutic change.

It is important to understand that the hypnosis used in hypnotherapy isn’t something which is “done to you” to make you do something against your will. On the contrary, although it is an incredibly powerful tool, it is used as part of a collaborative process, and will only work when it is used to make changes which you wish to make.
